It is a Non-Purine, selective Xanthine-Oxidase inhibitor which converts Xanthine and hypoxanthine to uric acid. Thus, it helps in reducing serum uric acid levels.
It is indicated in Gout and Hyperuricemia.
40 to 80mg daily. No dose adjustment needed in mild to moderate renal or hepatic impairment.
Ischemic Heart Disease and Congestive Heart Failure. Liver Function Test is recommended before Febuxostat therapy.
Febuxostat treatment should not be started until an acute attack of gout has completely subsided. Flares of gout may increase after Febuxostat administration as uric acid moves out of tissues, flares prophylaxis for six months is recommended.
Nausea, rash, joint pain, diarrhea, headache and increased serum hepatic enzyme levels.
Reduces the breakdown of mercaptopurine, azathioprine and theophylline increasing their levels in body. Not to be co-administered with these agents.
